THE BALBOA PREMIERE OF “DOUBLE FEATURES”, A SHORT FILM SHOT HERE AT THE THEATER!
Awhile back, a short film called Double Features was shot here at the Balboa. It tells the story of “a brokenhearted young man who waits for a date that never shows, and a lonely projectionist mourning the past while dreaming of a better future. They meet one night at an old art-house cinema and find that at the movies, anything can happen.” The short was beautifully photographed, and really makes the Balboa look spectacular, with striking shots of our marquee and projection booth. The film is very much a love letter to old theaters.

Magic Clubs
Magic clubs meet the needs of young or older people just getting started in magic; magicians who are working at improving their performances; magicians who are interested in discovering magic accross the country and around the world; and people who are just interested in magic as a fulfilling hobby.
The IBM (International Brotherhood of Magicians), and the SAM (Society of American Magicians) are the two largest organizations in the U.S. and both have local chapters around the world.
The greater bay area has several local chapters of these organizations. A hopefully complete list of these chapters with their contact information is shown below.
The I.B.M. is the world's largest organization for magicians and for people interested in the magical arts. Our Brotherhood is made up of nearly 15,000 members worldwide with over 300 local groups called Rings in more than 73 countries. The I.B.M. is considered to be the most respected organization for magic collectors, amateur and professional magicians in the world! If you have a sincere interest in the art of magic, we invite you to learn more about our organization.
The Society of American Magicians, founded on May 10, 1902 in Martinka's famous magic shop in New York City, New York, is the oldest and most prestigious magical society in the world. For over a century it has promoted the ideals shared by Kellar, Houdini, Thurston and over 30,000 others world-wide who have held membership in the society. These ideals include the elevation of the Art of Magic, the promotion of harmony among magicians, and the opposition of the unnecessary public exposure of magical effects.
The S.A.M. offers the opportunity to unite and associate with leaders in the World of Magic - not only professionals, but with amateurs, manufacturers, magic dealers, book authors and magic collectors. Through its monthly publications, annual conventions, and with over 250 "Assemblies" throughout the world, the S.A.M. provides the necessary forum for the advancement of magic through discussions, lectures, research, performances, and exchange of magic secrets within the magic community. To promote these endeavors the S.A.M. presents awards and fellowships in recognition of outstanding achievement in the Art of Magic.
The Oakland Magic Circle is a centerpiece of the Oakland Magic community. Each year it hosts a banquet and full evening magic show with invited professional magicians, both local competition winners and out of town magicians. They hold both Stage and Close-up contests with cash prizes and the chance to compete with the winners from other local clubs. They also hold a very well attended flea market and auction, and a "Spaghetti Feed" dinner and competition. Check their website www.oaklandmagiccircle.com or the list of upcoming events on the right of the screen.
